The Velma-Alma Comets will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against the Okeene Whippets. One thing working in Velma-Alma's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last 12 contests.
Velma-Alma had already proven themselves in the regular season, and didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. Everything went their way against Drumright on Friday as Velma-Alma made off with a 50-30 win. Considering Velma-Alma has won ten matchups by more than 19 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Velma-Alma's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Slade Strickland, who rushed for 174 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns while completing 79.3% of his passes. Strickland was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 51 yards. Langsten Walker was another key contributor, picking up 187 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Okeene faced Yale in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Okeene walked away with a 40-30 win over Yale on Friday. Winning may never get old, but Okeene sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
The last time Velma-Alma lost on the road was back back in September. Having now won three straight away games, they've pushed their record up to 12-1. They've been dominating during the matches in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 40 points. As for Okeene, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-3 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Velma-Alma against Okeene when the teams last played back in November of 2019 as the team secured a 70-20 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Velma-Alma since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
