Baseball Recap: Carrizo Springs Has No Trouble Against Pearsall

Carrizo Springs's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Monday. They put the hurt on the Pearsall Mavericks with a sharp 14-7 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Wildcats considering their one-run performance the game before.

Mathan Cruz made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. He has become a key player for Carrizo Springs: the team is 9-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise. Cruz was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Carrizo Springs let Dereck Martinez and Carmine Perez run wild. Martinez scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Perez got on base in four of his five plate appearances with five RBI and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave Perez a new career-high. Miguel Covarrubias was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-4.

Carrizo Springs' victory bumped their record up to 14-7. As for Pearsall, their loss was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-19.

Looking ahead, Carrizo Springs will venture away from home to challenge Floresville at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers/Jaguars will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something the Wildcats surely won't give up without a fight. As for Pearsall, they will challenge Pleasanton at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles will roll in looking for their 17th straight victory, something the Mavericks surely won't give up without a fight.
