MaxPreps honors 2013's top players in California's Sac-Joaquin Section.
Performance during the 2013 season, stats provided to MaxPreps, local postseason honors and coach recommendations determined the selections.
Offensive Player of the Year
QB - Jake Browning, Junior, FolsomBrowning did not slow down after his sensational sophomore season. He set the state record for most passing yards in a season with 5,737. He also set a state record with 75 touchdown passes. He was named the
MaxPreps Junior Player of the Year.
Defensive Player of the YearLB - Tyler Meteer, Senior, Del Oro (Loomis)The
Sacramento Bee’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year had 126 total tackles and six sacks. He played a key role on defense, offense and special teams for the Division I state runner-ups.

QB - Tyrell Anderson, Senior, Center (Antelope)If you went to a Center game this season, you may have noticed that Anderson was always on the field. He
led the state with 12 interceptions. He threw for more than 1,300 yards and had another 1,125 yards on the ground. In total, he had 2,368 all-purpose yards and 16 touchdowns.
Junior Player of the YearRB - Marcel Brown, Rio LindaAs a sophomore, Brown rushed for 1,454 yards and 15 scores. As a junior he exploded for 2,031 yards and 26 touchdowns. His 184 rushing yards per game was a big reason Rio Linda went 11-2 this season.
Co-Sophomore Players of the YearQB - Ian Book, Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills)Book didn’t show a lack of varsity experience for one of the section’s best teams. He tossed for 2,558 yards and 30 touchdowns for the Trojans.
QB - Caden Voges, SacramentoVoges lit up the stat line this year as a sophomore for the Dragons. He was the
No. 1 sophomore in the country with 4,351 yards and 48 touchdowns. Some may say Voges' competition wasn’t as good as some quarterbacks, but during his four postseason games he averaged 324 yards and had 11 touchdown passes.

WR - Alex Van Dyke Jr., Senior, Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove)The big 6-foot-4 wideout was the
Sierra Valley Conference MVP. He finished his senior season with 15 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards receiving. He is committed to UCLA.
WR - Damen Wheeler, Senior, SacramentoWheeler was
No. 4 in the country and No. 1 in the state with 1,931 yards receiving. He also hauled in 23 touchdowns. He was named the Sacramento Bee’s Offensive Player of the Year.
WR - Will McClure, Senior, FolsomMcClure stepped in as one of Jake Browning’s main weapons this season. He was No. 1 on the high-powered Folsom team in yards receiving (1,656), receiving touchdowns (23) and second in receptions with 97.
TE - Dylan Keeney, Senior, Granite BayThe
Sierra Foothill League Offensive MVP caught 40 passes for 791 yards and 14 touchdowns. The 6-5, 215-pound tight end is committed to play at Colorado next fall.
OL - Kameron Schroeder, Senior, Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove)Schroeder was named
Outstanding Offensive Lineman in the SVC. The 6-6, 270-pound tackle is currently committed to Duke.
OL - Spencer Stark, Senior, Central Catholic (Modesto)Stark is a now a member of back-to-back state championship teams. He was a huge piece on Central Catholic’s offense that rushed for more than 4,300 yards and 65 touchdowns.
OL - Brandon Johnson, Senior, Del Oro (Loomis)Johnson was a big reason the Golden Eagles were back in the state game. The center was named first team
All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee.
OL - Darrin Paulo, Junior, Grant (Sacramento)Paulo was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year in the Delta Valley Conference. Only a junior, he stands at 6-6 and 320 pounds.

OL - Cody Creason, Junior, FolsomCreason was named
Offensive Lineman of the Year in the Delta River League. Creason kept defenders off Jake Browning all year long.
QB - Peyton Wilfley, Senior, Casa Roble (Orangevale)Wilfley was a huge reason the Rams went from 1-9 in 2012 to 8-4 and winning a playoff game in 2013. The senior tossed for 2,898 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also rushed for another 590 yards and 12 scores.
QB - C. J. Spencer, Senior, Inderkum (Sacramento)Spencer was named the
Offensive MVP in the Tri-County Conference. He threw a touchdown in every game this season and finished with 1,724 yards passing and 23 scores. He is committed to UC Davis.
RB - Ja'Quan Gardner, Senior, Central Valley (Ceres)Gardner was named the
Offensive Player of the Year by Black Hat Football. He finished second in the section with 2,467 yards rushing and 27 scores. He rushed for 330 yards against Central Catholic and 378 against Manteca so he proved he could run hard against solid teams.
RB - Alex Laurel, Senior, MantecaThe
Black Hat Player of the Year and Valley Oak League MVP helped lead Manteca to a section title and a NorCal Regional Bowl berth. He finished the season with over 1,800 yards and 35 touchdowns.
RB - Wadus Parker, Senior, Elk GroveThe
Offensive Player of the Year in the Delta Valley Conference played a huge role in Elk Grove’s 12-2 season. Parker was named first team All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee.
ATH - Deaundre Terrell, Senior, Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove)Terrell did it all for Pleasant Grove. He played quarterback, defensive back and returned punts.
K - Kenny Smart, Senior, Central Catholic (Modesto)Smart was a clutch kicker in every way. He had 77 touchbacks, was over 90 percent on PAT attempts and nailed 11 field goals, including a 53-yarder.
First Team Defense

DL - Mosese Moala, Senior, Grant (Sacramento)The
Defensive Player of the Year in the Delta Valley Conference finished with 123 total tackles and 13 sacks.
DL - Ngalu Tapa, Senior, Burbank (Sacramento)The
Metropolitan Defensive Player of the Year finished with 14.5 sacks this season. The 6-3, 275 defensive tackle has given his verbal commitment to Washington State.
DL - Tanner Woods, Senior, Del Oro (Loomis)The
Co-Defensive Player of the Year by the Sacramento Bee was a rock for state runner-up Del Oro. He finished with 10 sacks.
DL - Anthony Baumgart, Senior, AntelopeBaumgart was named
Outstanding Defensive Lineman in the Capital Athletic League. He had 70 total tackles and eight sacks.
LB - Joey Banks, Senior, Franklin (Elk Grove)Banks was the
Delta Valley Conference MVP. He did it all for the Wildcats, whether that was rushing the ball or racking up 10.5 sacks and 155 total tackles on defense.
LB - Leonard Skattebo, Senior, Rio LindaSkattebo was named the
Capital Valley Conference MVP. He rushed for nearly 1,000 yards on offense, but his major impact was on defense. He had 149 tackles and was the rock in the middle for Rio Linda.
LB - Joseph Bello, Senior, HilmarThe
Black Hat Defensive Player of the Year helped Hilmar jump out to a perfect 13-0 record. The Trans-Valley League Defensive Player of the Year had 140 tackles on the season.
LB - Thomas Mahlman, Senior, Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills)Mahlman was a tackling machine for the Trojans. He led the section with 164 total tackles. The most impressive stat was his 126 solo tackles.
LB - Lonny Powell, Junior, SacramentoPowell is another all-purpose player in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Not only did he have 23 sacks, but he also had 1,026 all purpose yards on offense.

DB - Justice Shelton-Mosley, Junior, Capital Christian (Sacramento)Only a junior, Shelton-Mosley was second in the section with eight interceptions. He was named MVP of the Golden Empire League.
DB - Luke Bussey, Senior, Granite BayBussey was named first team
All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee. He had six interceptions on the season.
DB - Calvin Green, Senior, Burbank (Sacramento)Green was named the
MVP of the Metropolitan League. On offense he had 1,701 all purpose yards. He also had 52 total tackles and two interceptions.
DB - Joey Dodson, Senior, American CanyonDodson was third in the section with seven interceptions. He was named first team all-league in the
Solano County Athletic Conference.
P - Nolan Merker, Senior, Sheldon (Sacramento)Although most likely known for his play at quarterback, Merker was one heck of a punter. He averaged over 43 yards per punt.

WR - Dion Williams, Senior, Vanden (Fairfield)Williams was named the Solano County Athletic Conference MVP. He led the section with 24 receiving scores.
WR - Chas Reisinger, Senior, ColfaxReisinger was third in the section with 1,401 yards receiving.
WR - Troy Knox, Senior, FolsomKnox had 94 receptions for 1,229 yards and 15 touchdowns. He finished his career with 3,323 yards receiving and 34 touchdowns.
TE - Tyler Kaim, Senior, Vista del Lago (Folsom)Kaim finished with 949 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns. In six games this season he had over 100 yards receiving.
OL - Sage Wallace, Senior, Yuba CityWallace was named first team
All-Area by the Appeal Democrat. He was big reason Yuba City had such a high-powered offense.
OL - Kolton Miller, Senior, RosevilleThe 6-8, 280-pound tackle has offers from major Division I colleges. He was named first team
All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee.
OL - Billy Sharmoug, Senior, MantecaSharmoug was named first team All-Metro by the Stockton Record. He helped pave the way for running back Alex Laurel.
OL - Matthew Morris, Senior, Rio LindaMorris was a big reason Marcel Brown had more than 2,000 yards rushing.
OL - Mark Mueller, Senior, Whitney (Rocklin)Mueller was named the Outstanding Offensive Lineman in the Capital Athletic League.
QB - Michael Wilson, Senior, ColfaxWilson set school records and was third in the section with 3,560 yards and 46 scores.

QB - Jason Elenberger, Senior, Jesuit (Carmichael)Elenberger passed for over 2,000 yards and also rushed for another 1,064 yards.
RB - Dylan Kainrath, Senior, Del Oro (Loomis)The Offensive MVP in the Sierra Foothill League helped carry Del Oro to the Division I state title game. He finished with over 1,800 yards and 24 scores on the ground.
RB - Jomon Dotson, Senior, American CanyonDotson was named the
Napa Valley Register Player of the Year. The Colorado commit finished with 2,004 yards rushing.
RB - Andrew Brown, Senior, Ripon ChristianAlthough Brown played for a small school, it’s hard to overlook his impressive numbers. The Stockton Record’s first team All-Metro back finished first in the section with 2,781 yards rushing and 48 scores.
ATH - Todd Valliere, Senior, Placer (Auburn)Valliere was key for the Hillmen in all aspects of the game. He had 2,375 all purpose yards. He often played other teams' top wideouts as a defensive back.
K - Ben Trumm, Senior, FolsomTrumm was often on the field this year kicking PATs, and he didn’t let down the Bulldogs. He nailed 100 out of 101 attempts on the season. He was also 7-for-8 on field goals.
Second Team DefenseDL - Nifae Lealao, Senior, Capital Christian (Sacramento)The Stanford-bound big man forced teams to run away from him. Lealao was named first team
All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee.
DL - Jaylon Deas, Senior, Yuba City

Deas was the
Defensive Player of the Year by the Appeal Democrat. He could have been put at safety, linebacker or defensive back as he played all three positions this season.
DL - Noah Letuligasenoa Ta'amu, Senior, Elk GroveLetuligasenoa-Ta’amu was named the Delta Valley League Defensive Lineman of the Year. He finished with 18.5 sacks this season
DL - Cyrus Boone, Senior, Lincoln (Stockton)Boone was named the Defensive Lineman of the Year by
Black Hat Football. The 6-2, 250-pound defensive end was called “The Virus.”
LB - Quenton Hagen, Senior, El Camino (Sacramento)Hagen was named Defensive Player of the Year in the Capital Athletic League. He finished with 104 total tackles.
LB - Rodney Ellison, Senior, FolsomEllison was named one of the Defensive Players of the Year in the Delta River League. He finished with 78 total tackles, two sacks and two interceptions.
LB - Cameron Smith, Junior, Granite BayThe junior had another solid season for Granite Bay. Smith was named first team All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee after recording 126 total tackles on the season.
LB - Trent Buenzli, Senior, Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills)Buenzli and Thomas Malham may have been the best linebacking duo in the area. Buenzli finished with 86 total tackles and 7.5 sacks.
LB - Derrick "D.J." Hughes, Senior, American CanyonHughes was the
Napa Valley Register Defensive Player of the Year. He had 16 sacks this season.

DB - Daniel Ruffin, Senior, Stagg (Stockton)Ruffin was named the
San Joaquin Player of the Year by Black Hat Football. He did just about everything for Stagg this season.
DB - Austin Thompson, Senior, Yuba CityThompson was named a first team
All-Area selection by the Appeal Democrat. He had 50 total tackles and six interceptions.
DB - Robert Sanders, Senior, Franklin (Elk Grove)Woods was moved to free safety after starting the year at linebacker. He finished the season with 111 tackles and five interceptions.
DB - Jordan Thomas, Senior, Inderkum (Sacramento)Thomas was all over the defensive side of the ball. You could find him at linebacker or playing in the secondary against stronger passing teams.
P - Jacob Sipes, Senior, Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills)Sipes used his leg as a weapon this season, pinning teams down inside the 20 six times. He averaged over 39 yards per punt.
