Genoa-Hugo is 0-4 against Cheyenne Wells since August of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Genoa-Hugo Pirates will head out on the road to face off against the Cheyenne Wells Tigers at 2:00 p.m. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Colorado (Genoa-Hugo is ranked 27th, while Cheyenne Wells is ranked 25th).
Last Thursday, things could have been worse for Genoa-Hugo, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 40-26 loss to Idalia. Genoa-Hugo was down 40-20 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Genoa-Hugo's loss came about despite a quality game from Konner Rowden-Stum, who picked up 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground.
Meanwhile, Cheyenne Wells pushed their score all the way to 44 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell just short of Eads by a score of 46-44. Despite running the score up even higher than they did two weeks ago (40), Cheyenne Wells still had to take the loss.
Despite their loss, Cheyenne Wells saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Perry Chadwick, who threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground, was perhaps the best of all. Trey Scheler was another key contributor, rushing for 90 yards and a touchdown.
The losses dropped Genoa-Hugo to 3-4 and Cheyenne Wells to 3-5.
Saturday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Genoa-Hugo has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 152.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Cheyenne Wells struggles in that department as they've been even better at 160.1 per game. It's looking like Saturday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Genoa-Hugo took a serious blow against Cheyenne Wells in their previous meeting back in October of 2021, falling 56-8. Can Genoa-Hugo avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
