The Fenwick Friars will venture away from home to face off against the Aurora Central Catholic Chargers at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Fenwick is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Fenwick can't be too worried about heading out to take on Aurora Central Catholic: they just beat Providence Catholic at home, who had been dominant on their own field up to that point. The Friars walked away with a 7-4 victory over the Celtics on Saturday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Friars.
Leah Lowery spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on four hits.
At the plate, Alex Purta was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Kailey Janda was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Aurora Central Catholic had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.2 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Blazers with a sharp 16-1 win. The Chargers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 13 contests by six runs or more this season.
Corina Miller was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted over her last seven matchups. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Kate Gambro was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Ashley Moore, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Aurora Central Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .636. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Aurora Central Catholic's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.5 runs over those games. As for Fenwick, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Both Fenwick and Aurora Central Catholic just can't seem to miss. The Friars have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.9 hits per game. However, it's not like Aurora Central Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.1 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
