Leo is a perfect 10-0 against Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Lions will challenge the Saints at 6:00 p.m. Leo will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
If Leo beats Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger with nine runs on Monday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. The Lions' pitcher stepped up to hand Columbia City a 9-0 shutout on Wednesday. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by six runs or more this season.
Not much got past Leah Shappell, who gave up just three hits and racked up eight Ks to keep Columbia City off the board. Shappell has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Ella Moore and Sara Hoeppner did most of the damage at the plate: Moore went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and one double, while Hoeppner went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Hoeppner has posted since back in May of 2024. Malina Lape was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and one stolen base.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Leo kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in five consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They lost 18-11 to South Bend Saint Joseph.
Mackenzie Nees stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooklyn Baker, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Leo's win was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-4. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, their loss dropped their record down to 15-9.
Monday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Leo hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .312. However, it's not like Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger struggles in that department as they've averaged .354. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Leo was able to grind out a solid win over Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger when the teams last played on May 1st, winning 10-7. Do the Lions have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Saints turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
