Laurel Highlands recap September 17, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Forest Hills, who took down 136th ranked Forest Hills, 16-0. David Maruca threw for 108 yards and ran for 18 yards in the win.
Bishop Carroll scaled the state rankings by moving to 204 from 295 this week, the biggest jump in Laurel Highlands. The Huskies were able to make move up by topping the Rangers 16-0.
Tanner Ambrisco was the best wideout in the league this week as Central Cambria topped Penn Cambria. Ambrisco tallied 9 receptions for 131 yards.
Sam Curry was the best running back in the league this week. In 28 carries, he ran for 162 yards as Westmont Hilltop bested the Panthers. Cody Sabo also contributed to the rushing game with 15 yards on the ground.
Matt Shaffer put up the best numbers through the air as Richland defeated Bedford. He finished with 16 completions for 228 yards and 3 touchdowns. Shaffer's favorite target this week was Kyle Flick, who caught 6 passes for 89 yards.
He went 16-24 with 0 interceptions.
The Rams' Shaffer and Flick have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading Laurel Highlands in both passing and receiving yards. 6-2 quarterback Shaffer has thrown for 602 yards this season, while Flick has 11 catches for 251 yards. The Hilltoppers' Curry leads the league in rushing yards with 345.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Greater Johnstown takes on Richland. The Trojans are currently in third, while Brandon Bailey's team is in second.
There should be lots of points scored when Greater Johnstown and the Rams face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Tony Penna Jr's team comes in having scored 89 this season, while Richland has scored 144. The Trojans scored 47 points last week as they bested Westmont Hilltop.
Bishop Guilfoyle was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from 12th to ninth in the league. The Marauders beat Cambria Heights 17-3 earlier in the week.
