If the Sandia Prep Sundevils were riding high off their 58-13 takedown of the Cottonwood Classical Prep Coyotes last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Sandia Prep fell just short of Cuba by a score of 44-41. Sandia Prep was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Cuba apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.
Despite the defeat, Sandia Prep had strong showings from Madlyn Dopson, who scored 16 points along with four steals, and Maddy Weisler, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Calkins was another key contributor, scoring six points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
Cuba was led to victory by Emma Yazzie and Aleah Nez. Yazzie almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds, while Nez scored 14 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Nez has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Maliyah Herrera, who scored six points.
Sandia Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 9-12. As for Cuba, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-11.
Sandia Prep will take on Bosque at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Sandia Prep focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Friday. As for Cuba, they will head out on the road to take on East Mountain at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Cuba is facing East Mountain at the right time seeing as East Mountain is stuck on a six-game losing streak.
