Not much got past Gracie De La Cruz, who gave up just a hit and racked up 13 Ks to keep Chantilly off the board. Those 13 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for De La Cruz.
At the plate, South Lakes' win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Sofia Ponce, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, while it was Westfield who put the first runs on the board on Tuesday, it was James Madison who put up more. The Bulldogs fell just short of the Warhawks by a score of 6-5. The defeat continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their meetings with the Warhawks: they've now lost eight in a row.
Ava Petruncio was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Hannah Burstein and Carly Austin stepped up to the plate in a big way. Burstein went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI, while Austin went 1-for-3 with one home run. Ciara Ramsey also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Westfield now has a losing record of 7-8. As for South Lakes, their victory bumped their record up to 11-5.
Westfield's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Friday. South Lakes has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.2 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Westfield, though, as they've been averaging only 3.8 strikeouts. Will South Lakes keep running through batters, or will the Bulldogs buck the trend?
South Lakes couldn't quite finish off Westfield when the teams last played two weeks ago and fell 4-2. Can the Seahawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
