The Latta Vikings posted their closest win since December 7, 2023 on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Green Sea Floyds 40-37. The win was nothing new for Latta as they're now sitting on three straight.
Shawniza Bethea was her usual excellent self, scoring 14 points along with six steals. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Latta's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Anziya Jones, who scored seven points along with two steals.
Despite the defeat, Green Sea Floyds saw an underclassman step up: Shantavia Hilliard scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Hilliard is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played. Another player making a difference was Tttia Lynch, who scored seven points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Green Sea Floyds were working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Latta only posted three assists.
Latta pushed their record up to 8-10 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. Admittedly, the team didn't face the toughest opposition across those games, namely Green Sea Floyds, Lamar, and Hannah-Pamplico. As for Green Sea Floyds, their loss dropped their record down to 8-14.
Latta won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Hannah-Pamplico at 6:00 p.m. on February 6th. Latta is facing Hannah-Pamplico at the right time seeing as Hannah-Pamplico is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Green Sea Floyds, they will head out on the road to face off against Lamar at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in South Carolina (Green Sea Floyds is ranked 227th, while Lamar is ranked 225th).
