Basketball Game Preview: Springstead Eagles vs. Leesburg Yellow Jackets

The Springstead Eagles will challenge the Leesburg Yellow Jackets on Wednesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Springstead is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Monday. They breezed by Belleview to the tune of 60-30. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 311th, while the Rattlers are ranked 666th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

It was another big night for Zion McKenzie, who went 8 of 15 on his way to 18 points and three steals. He is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryan Sayre, who posted ten points and six steals.

Springstead was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2024.

Meanwhile, Leesburg didn't have too much breathing room in their game against South Lake on Tuesday, but they still walked away with a 60-56 victory.

Leesburg's win came from a few key players Springstead will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Xavier Campbell, who earned 14 points. Another player making a difference was Angelo Moton, who had 12 points.

Leesburg is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a massive bump to their 12-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.7 points per game. As for Springstead, their record is now 15-10.

Springstead came up short against Leesburg in their previous matchup back in February of 2022, falling 59-52. Can Springstead avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
