Baseball Recap: Southwestern Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Southwestern came out on top against Milan on Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run fifth inning. The Rebels were the clear victors by a 12-5 margin over the Indians. The result was nothing new for the Rebels, who have now won six games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Adam Traylor was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Southwestern's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-4 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Austin Jenkins was excellent, getting on base in two of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Southwestern is undefeated when Jenkins posts two or more runs, but 0-4 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Braxton Lewis, who went 1-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.

The win (which was Southwestern's third in a row) raised their record to 7-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.3 runs over those games. As for Milan, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-5.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southwestern will welcome Silver Creek at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Dragons' pitching crew has only allowed 1.9 runs per game this season, so the Rebels' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Milan, they will be playing in front of their home fans against North Decatur at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
