Basketball Recap: Wesleyan Christian Academy Comes Up Short

It was a good run, but Wesleyan Christian Academy unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Thursday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 63-62 to the South Wake Sabres. The Trojans were up 54-40 in the third quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

Wesleyan Christian Academy lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Cooper Cox, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine assists. Cox is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played. Blythe Cunningham was another key player, going 7 for 13 on her way to 16 points.

Cox wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Wesleyan Christian Academy was working as a unit and finished the game with 21 assists. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now racked up at least 20 assists in three consecutive matches.

South Wake's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Rebekah Hartzell, who went 5 of 12 en route to 18 points along with five assists and three steals. Another player making a difference was Savannah Taylor, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 14 rebounds.

Wesleyan Christian Academy's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-6. As for South Wake, their victory was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 21-1.

Wesleyan Christian Academy wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 76-28 win against High Point Christian Academy on the 24th. As for South Wake, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 65-12 victory against Durham Flight HomeSchool on the 25th.
