The Fallston Cougars will take on the Harford Tech Cobras on Monday. Fallston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Fallston didn't have quite enough to beat Bohemia Manor and fell 6-5.
Ally Underwood spent all 7.1 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits.
On the hitting side, Mary Pfaff made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Alex McDougall, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, with a playoff win on the line, Harford Tech rose to the challenge on Thursday. They never let the Raiders get on the board and left with a 29-0 win. The Cobras' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Lily Peters made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with four runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, Harford Tech got a massive performance out of Dyani Bryant, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with six RBI and two runs. Those six RBI gave Bryant a new career-high. Evey Colby was another key player, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with five runs, three RBI, and one stolen base.
Harford Tech always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .867. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Fallston has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 16-6 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Harford Tech, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-13.
Harford Tech's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Fallston has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Harford Tech, though, as they've been averaging 10.2 hits. Given Fallston's sizable advantage in that area, the Cobras will need to find a way to close that gap.
Fallston got the 'W' when the teams last played back in April against Harford Tech by a conclusive 16-5 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
