The Bristol Bay Angels lost against the Sand Point Eagles/Lady Eagles last Wednesday, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. Bristol Bay fell just short of Sand Point by a score of 48-46.
Despite the defeat, Bristol Bay saw an underclassman step up: Olivia Harvilla scored 22 points. That was a full 47.8% of Bristol Bay's points, marking the ninth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Brooke Phelps was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Sand Point's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Precious Kaminanga, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds and five steals. It was the first time this season that Kaminanga pulled down eight or more rebounds. Another player making a difference was Morgan Gundersen, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Bristol Bay's defeat dropped their record down to 3-6. As for Sand Point, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season.
Bristol Bay is on the road again on Thursday and plays Tri-Valley on February 1st. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in Alaska (Bristol Bay is ranked 71st, while Tri-Valley is ranked 56th). As for Sand Point, they will head out on the road to challenge Birchwood Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Sand Point focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Saturday.
