The London Pirates will be playing in front of their home fans against the Mathis Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
Last Friday, London was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 34-29 to Goliad. While losing is never fun, London can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 672nd, while Goliad is ranked 312th).
Meanwhile, Mathis had to suffer through a rough 49-16 loss at the hands of Edna. Mathis was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 27-0.
Despite the defeat, Mathis saw an underclassman step up: Edward Montemayor rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.0 yards per carry.
London has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-5 record this season. As for Mathis, their defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their overall record down to 3-5.
Everything went London's way against Mathis when the teams last played back in November of 2022 as London made off with a 36-12 win. Will London repeat their success, or does Mathis have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
