Basketball Recap: Mcfarland Sets Scoring Season-High Against Portage

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask McFarland). They blew past the Portage Warriors 92-64 on Friday. Given the Spartans' advantage in MaxPreps' Wisconsin basketball rankings (they are ranked 95th, while the Warriors are ranked 411th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Defeat or not, Portage got some senior leadership from Elias Vera and Aidan Warfield. Vera went 8 for 14 en route to 23 points, while Warfield went 6 of 10 on his way to 15 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Warfield has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Brody Kayartz was another key player, putting up three points.

McFarland is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 79.2 points per game. As for Portage, their loss was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-10.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. McFarland will head out to take on Columbus at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. McFarland is facing Columbus at the right time seeing as Columbus is stuck on a four-game losing streak. Portage has already played their next game (against Markesan), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
