Cheyenne Mountain came into Friday's contest looking for another win against Coronado, but Lyrik Smith wouldn't allow it. The Cougars came out on top in a nail-biter against the Red-Tailed Hawks on Friday, sneaking past 55-53 with plenty of help from Smith, who shot 50% from the field on his way to 17 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. He has also been stellar as far as shooting accuracy is concerned: he's posted one of at least 45% every time he's hit the court this season.
Another player making a difference was Turner Whitney, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Coronado is 2-1 when Whitney posts eight or more rebounds, but 2-3 otherwise.
Several Red-Tailed Hawks players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Marek Patterson, who went 6-for-10 en route to 14 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Sonny Hunt, who posted 13 points.
The victory got Coronado back to even at 4-4. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 6-1.
Coronado and Cheyenne Mountain will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next games. The next time the Cougars see the court they'll take on Sand Creek at 1:00 p.m. on January 3, 2026.
