Severance has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will challenge the Frederick Golden Eagles at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Severance stacked a fifth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Thursday. They claimed a resounding 65-30 win over Roosevelt at home. Given Severance's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 85th, while Roosevelt is ranked 285th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Brady Varney was his usual excellent self, scoring 13 points along with five rebounds and four blocks. He hasn't dropped below two blocks for five straight games. Another player making a difference was Blake Varney, who scored nine points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, Frederick escaped with a win on Thursday against Thompson Valley by the margin of a single free throw, 67-66.
Frederick's success was spearheaded by the efforts of JJ Strojinc, who scored 25 points, and Jovan Aldana, who scored 19 points along with seven steals and six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Aldana has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Zach Burton, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds.
Severance pushed their record up to 8-4 with that victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.0 points per game. As for Frederick, they now have a winning record of 7-6.
Saturday's matchup is shaping up to be a scrappy contest: Severance have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 32.7 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Frederick, though, as they've been averaging only 29.7 rebounds per game. Given Severance's sizeable advantage in that area, Frederick will need to find a way to close that gap.
Severance came up short against Frederick when the teams last played back in February of 2023, falling 74-65. Can Severance avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
