The Clifton Cubs won the last time they faced the Elkhart Elks, and things went their way on Friday too. Clifton snuck past Elkhart with a 22-16 win.
Clifton's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Joaquin De la Hoya led the charge by rushing for 98 yards and two touchdowns on only 12 carries. Clifton also got a significant boost from Parker Tunnell, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 139 yards.
Several Elks players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jackson Denney, who rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on only six carries. Denney's longest rush was for an incredible 80 yards. Trystyn Tidrow was another key contributor, throwing for 205 yards and a touchdown.
Clifton's win bumped their record up to 5-5. As for Elkhart, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-6 record this season.
Clifton will be playing at home against Florence on Friday. Florence is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Elkhart, they will head out on the road to face off against Rogers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Rogers knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three games -- so hopefully Elkhart likes a good challenge.
