The Cumberland Pirates are taking a road trip to face off against the Mattoon Greenwave at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Cumberland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.1 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Cumberland got the win against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City by a conclusive 11-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Pirates.
The team relied heavily on Lauren Schnepper, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Ashton Tolen, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Cumberland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. They are 8-2 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Mattoon was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They lost 24-2 to Mt. Zion.
Mattoon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ava Leo, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double. Sofia Gomez also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Mattoon now has a losing record of 3-4. As for Cumberland, their victory bumped their record up to 10-6.
Mattoon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Cumberland has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Mattoon, though, as they've been averaging 9.4 hits. Given Cumberland's sizable advantage in that area, the Greenwave will need to find a way to close that gap.
Cumberland came out on top in a nail-biter against Mattoon in their previous matchup back in April of 2025, sneaking past 5-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
