The Myers Park Mustangs put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top against South Mecklenburg by a score of 45-38. Given Myers Park's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked sixth, while South Mecklenburg is ranked 132nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Myers Park's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amani Barner, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds. Laura Lassiter was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with six rebounds and five assists.
South Mecklenburg's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of KB Brown, who almost dropped a triple-double on 11 points, nine assists, and nine blocks, and Makailah Davis who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. That's the first time this season that Brown posted eight or more assists. Another player making a difference was Kaitlyn Hensley, who scored six points along with two steals.
Myers Park's win bumped their record up to 16-0. As for South Mecklenburg, their loss dropped their record down to 9-7.
Myers Park won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Military Magnet Academy at 1:30 p.m. on January 20th. Military Magnet Academy has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 559 points over their last six matchups. As for South Mecklenburg, they will head out on the road to challenge Ardrey Kell at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Ardrey Kell will be looking to keep their six-game home win streak alive.
