Hillcrest is 9-1 against Monroe County since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Hillcrest Jaguars will head out on the road to face off against the Monroe County Tigers at 6:00 p.m. Hillcrest is hoping to put an end to a six-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
Hillcrest scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They breezed by Central at home to the tune of 44-14. That looming 44-14 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for Hillcrest yet this season.
Hillcrest's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Arreon "Tweety" Lopez, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds and four steals, and Sonija Evans, who scored nine points along with nine steals and five assists. Those four steals set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Khole Clarke, who scored two points along with eight rebounds and five steals.
Meanwhile, Monroe County came tearing into Tuesday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17.8 points) and they left with even more momentum. They strolled past Georgiana with points to spare, taking the game 68-51. Given Monroe County's advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 94th, while Georgiana is ranked 279th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Hillcrest's record is now 2-5. Monroe County's record is now 5-1.
Hillcrest ended up a good deal behind Monroe County when the teams last played back in January, losing 51-32. Can Hillcrest avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
