Lila McLeod was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, San Ramon Valley saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sophia Jin, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base. Jin is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
Meanwhile, Northgate suffered their closest loss since February 28, 2024 on Thursday. They fell just short of Newark Memorial by a score of 5-3. The loss was the Broncos' first of the season.
Ashley Herman was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Herman was even better at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season.
Having lost for the first time this season, Northgate fell to 3-1. As for San Ramon Valley, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 6-2-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. San Ramon Valley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Northgate struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 10.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
San Ramon Valley took their win against Northgate when the teams last played back in March of 2016 by a conclusive 6-0. Will San Ramon Valley repeat their success, or does Northgate has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
