On Saturday, the Spanish Springs Cougars faced the Fernley Vaqueros in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Spanish Springs took a 67-55 hit to the loss column at the hands of Fernley. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Several Cougars players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Layni Noonkester, who scored 13 points along with 4 steals. Noonkester is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Aaliyah Vance, who scored 13 points along with 4 steals.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Fernley to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jaelece Wasson, who scored 22 points. That makes it two consecutive games in which Wasson has scored at least 25% of Fernley's points. Kaiserita Otuafi was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with 9 rebounds.
Spanish Springs' loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Fernley, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 8-0.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Spanish Springs will take on Lowry at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Lowry is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 55 points per game. As for Fernley, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Damonte Ranch at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Damonte Ranch focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Saturday.
