Baseball Recap: Deming Victorious

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Deming ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They won by a run and slipped past the Gadsden Panthers 7-6. Seven seems to be a good number for the Wildcats as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Estevan Mariscal made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple and one RBI. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits.

In other pitching news, Daniel Porras looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Daniel Mosier, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Chris Olvera, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and two RBI.

Deming kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive matches.

Deming pushed their record up to 5-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Gadsden, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-4.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Deming Wildcats challenge Alamogordo Tigers at 4:00 p.m. on March 13th. Gadsden will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on El Paso at 6:30 p.m. on March 18th.
