After four games on the road, Cortez is heading back home. They will take on the Prescott Badgers at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Even though Cortez has not done well against Combs recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Cortez snuck past Combs with a 64-58 win. Winning is a bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 20 to 11 on the offensive boards, as Cortez did.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cortez to victory, but perhaps none more so than Tylin Hunter, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Devan Fowler, who scored 14 points along with 5 assists.
Meanwhile, Prescott had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They came out on top against Mountain Ridge by a score of 75-68. Given Prescott's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while Mountain Ridge is ranked 95th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Prescott's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Uriah Tenette, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 10 rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Tenette has scored at least 25% of Prescott's points. Another player making a difference was Josiah Peoples, who scored 20 points along with 5 rebounds and 5 steals.
The losses dropped Cortez to 3-1 and Combs to 5-2.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Cortez hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 66.3 points per game. It's a different story for Prescott, though, as they've been averaging only 69.6 per game. The only thing between Cortez and another offensive beatdown is Prescott.
