5A Region IV District 31 recap Oct. 3, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to San Benito, who took down 313th ranked San Benito, 34-28.
Weslaco moved up to 351 from 468 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 5A Region IV District 31. The Panthers climbed the ranks as a result of a 43-10 win over Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial.
BRANDON GUZMAN and PETER GONZALES gave Weslaco East a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. GUZMAN threw for 61 yards and one touchdown, while GONZALES ran for 116 yards. Teammate ALEJANDRO FLORES added to the ground attack by rushing for 109 yards.
Victor Gaitan was the best wideout in the league this week as the Greyhounds fell to Rowe. Gaitan tallied one reception for 42 yards. Manuel Sanchez helped San Benito's passing attack out by catching two balls for 37 yards.
Jesse Jimenez provided a threat through the air and on the ground as San Benito lost to the Warriors. He completed eight passes for 146 yards and also ran for 67 yards.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Wolverines feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Manny Mancillas has thrown for 719 yards and six touchdowns this season, while Jaime Borrego has 22 catches for 438 yards. Robert Rodriguez leads the league in rushing with 364 yards.
A big matchup in 5A Region IV District 31 this week will be when Spencer Gantt's team takes on Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North. As it stands, the Greyhounds are in second, while the Raiders are in fourth.
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North took down Pharr-San Juan-Alamo 41-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.
