2A Region 1 recap October 22, 2013
Walnut added to the longest winning streak in 2A Region 1 this week by beating New Site, 29-8. The win marks eighth in a row for the the Wildcats.
East Union lost to Baldwyn 48-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Ozzie Price was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Bearcats topped the Urchins. The 5-foot-10 junior nabbed 1 interception and forced 1 fumble.
Corbin Scott threw for 189 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was 10-16 with 1 interception.
Scott put up the best numbers through the air as Baldwyn defeated East Union. Scott's favorite target this week was Martel Brown, who caught 2 passes for 59 yards.
Mantachie's Dustin Carrell and Nick Burns led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Carrell has thrown for 1,339 yards this season, while Burns has 28 catches for 531 yards. The Royals' J.T. Herring leads the league in rushing yards with 1,191.
One of the league's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when the Mustangs and Scott Duley's team face off next week.
A big matchup in 2A Region 1 this week will be when Michael Gray's team takes on Walnut. The Bearcats are currently in fourth, while John Meeks' team is in first.
Baldwyn made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 7,159 from 7,293. The improvement was largely due to a 48-7 victory over the Urchins last week.
