Football Recap: Braxten Eli Montalvo Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Lyford + How To Watch

Bishop's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They came out on top against the Lyford Bulldogs by a score of 21-13. The Badgers have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Bulldogs, too.

Bishop's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Braxten Eli Montalvo led the charge by throwing for 321 yards and three TDs while picking up 14.6 yards per attempt. Those 321 passing yards gave Eli Montalvo a new career-high. Matthew Reyna also helped out as he racked up 119 receiving yards.

Bishop didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Asaiah Aguilera, Nathaniel Jasso, and Reyna picked up one apiece. Jasso is also crushing it when it comes to total tackles: he's made at least six every time he's taken the field this season.

Lyford's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ryan Gonzales, who threw for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 18 passes, and also rushed for 42 yards. 82 of Gonzales' passing yards were hauled in by John Reyna.

Bishop's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Lyford, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.

Coming up, Bishop will venture away from home to challenge Rio Hondo at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Bobcats' defense has only allowed 9.8 points per game this season, so the Badgers' offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Lyford, they will be playing at home against Falfurrias at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs will be up against the Fightin' Jerseys' rather soft defense (which has allowed 48.5 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
