If the South Lake Eagles were riding high off their 52-24 takedown of the Tavares Bulldogs last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. South Lake fell just short of Wiregrass Ranch by a score of 44-42. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss South Lake has suffered yet this season.
South Lake lost on Wednesday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Kaylin Cockefair, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and four blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazmyn Robles, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Wiregrass Ranch got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Tennae Cabral out in front who scored seven points along with five rebounds and four blocks. Another player making a difference was Claire Kelley, who scored 12 points along with five steals.
South Lake's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-8. As for Wiregrass Ranch, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 6-7.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. South Lake won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against The Villages Charter at 7:00 p.m. on January 18th. Hopefully The Villages Charter focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Wednesday. As for Wiregrass Ranch, Wiregrass Ranch and Newsome will face off at 6:30 p.m. on January 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Newsome is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
