The Chariho Chargers will square off against the Ponaganset Chieftains at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Chariho is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Chariho is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Prout, who was ranked 12th at the time (Chariho was ranked seventh). The Chargers walked away with a 7-2 win over the Crusaders on Tuesday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Chargers as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Adriana Jeannenot made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Brianna DeGiacomo was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Maddie Dorgan was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
Chariho kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Tuesday just wasn't the day for Ponaganset's offense. They lost 14-0 to Coventry on Tuesday. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Chieftains' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Ponaganset saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kyla Angell, who went 1-for-2 with one double.
This is the second loss in a row for Ponaganset and nudges their season record down to 2-4. As for Chariho, they now have a winning record of 5-4.
Ponaganset's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Chariho has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.7 hits per game. It's a different story for Ponaganset, though, as they've been averaging 10.2 hits. Given Chariho's sizable advantage in that area, the Chieftains will need to find a way to close that gap.
Chariho skirted past Ponaganset 8-6 in their previous meeting back in May of 2023. Do the Chargers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Chieftains turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
