North Pontotoc (Ecru, Miss.) took an early lead against Kossuth (Miss.) and held on for a 52-15 victory on Saturday.
The Vikings put up seven points in the opening quarter. North Pontotoc scored on a
Trey Jolly touchdown pass to
Greg Gambrel.
After taking the lead on a Jolly touchdown pass to Gambrel in the first quarter, NP was up 27-3 at the half.
The Ecru school expanded its lead to 37 points entering the fourth quarter. The Vikings scored three times in the third, including once on a
Jeremy Wilkes touchdown run.
North Pontotoc's most effective player was Jolly. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns. He has now scored five touchdowns on the season.
The Aggies came in giving up 17.0 points per game this season. Kossuth struggled against North Pontotoc's offense, which entered the game scoring 24.8 points per game. The Ecru school came in allowing an average of 21.7 points per game this season. The Vikings held firm on the defensive front, and kept KHS well above the 3.2 points it had been averaging per game.
The victory was a step in the right direction for North Pontotoc, which was coming off a 24-21 defeat at the hands of New Albany in its previous game. The loss was the third in a row for the Aggies.
North Pontotoc (4-3) will play a 3A Region 1 game against Booneville next week, while Kossuth (1-5) will take on Belmont also in a 3A Region 1 game.
