The Newman AA Cardinals came tearing into Friday's game with 11 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.9 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Varsity Opponent by a score of 67-60. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Newman AA found their leader in underclassman Quinn Costello, who dropped a double-double on 26 points and ten rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Costello has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Coleman Hopson, who scored 14 points.
Newman AA's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 78.0 points per game. As for Varsity Opponent, they have been struggling recently as they've lost 23 of their last 26 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 367-1329-2 record this season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newman AA will take on Putnam Vo-Tech/Sci-Tech at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. Newman AA knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 16 matches -- so hopefully Putnam Vo-Tech/Sci-Tech likes a good challenge. As for Varsity Opponent, they will be playing at home against Anthem Prep at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Anthem Prep will roll in looking for their 14th straight victory, something Varsity Opponent surely won't give up without a fight.
