Football Recap: Gatesville Starts off Right with Win over Taylor

Gatesville gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They breezed past the Taylor Ducks to the tune of 48-15. The win continues a trend for the Hornets in their matchups with the Ducks: they've now won five in a row.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Gatesville to victory, but perhaps none more so than Gehrig Keeton, who threw for 302 yards and four TDs while completing 73.7% of his passes. Those four passing touchdowns gave Keeton a new career-high. Gatesville's leading receiver Amos Phillips was Keeton's top target yet again, picking up 147 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Gatesville didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Taylor to a completion percentage of just 45.5%. Given Keeton's standout performance, it's clear the Ducks' secondary just wasn't on the same level.

Damien Calico and Eric Walker Ii certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Calico picked up 199 receiving yards and one touchdown, while Walker Ii rushed for 88 yards and one TD. Calico was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 64 yards.

Looking ahead, Gatesville will head out on the road to face off against Glen Rose at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Taylor, they will host Pflugerville Connally at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
