Rio Grande is 0-10 against Manzano since April of 2019 but things could change on Saturday. The Rio Grande Ravens will head out to challenge the Manzano Monarchs at 10:00 a.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Rio Grande not only won last Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 13, 2024. They were the clear victor by a 17-5 margin over Sandia Prep. The victory continues a trend for the Ravens in their matchups with the Sundevils: they've now won four in a row.
Jaslyn Gallegos made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. Gallegos was also big at the plate, scoring three runs while going 2-for-2.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brianna Knight, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two triples, five RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Ceanna Sanchez, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Rio Grande always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .735. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sandia Prep only posted an OBP of .375.
Meanwhile, the third road match was the charm for Manzano, as they earned their first road win of the season. They never let Highland get on the board and left with a 13-0 win on Wednesday. The Monarchs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Not much got past Briana Largo, who gave up just a hit and racked up ten Ks to keep Highland off the board.
At the plate, Shania Aragon was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing Three bases. while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophia Rios Duvall, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-1.
Manzano's victory ended a seven-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-4. As for Rio Grande, the win got them back to even at 1-1.
Rio Grande suffered a grim 21-2 defeat to Manzano in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Can Rio Grande avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
