Rio Grande City has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Martin Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Last Tuesday, Rio Grande City came up short against Palmview and fell 40-27. While losing is never fun, Rio Grande City can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 477th, while Palmview is ranked 181st).
Meanwhile, Martin was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Tuesday as they fell 39-34 to Nixon. Martin has not had much luck with Nixon recently, as the team's come up short the last eight times they've met.
Kiara Gonzalez put forth a good effort for the losing side as she dropped a double-double on ten points and 13 rebounds. She scored a full 29.4% of Martin's points, the sixth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Priscilla Torres, who scored ten points along with three steals.
Rio Grande City's defeat dropped their record down to 10-7. As for Martin, their defeat was their seventh straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 9-15.
Rio Grande City came up short against Martin in their previous meeting back in January, falling 34-26. Can Rio Grande City avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
