McDowell extended their losing streak to seven on Tuesday, dropping them down to 5-13. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 7-5 heartbreaker at the hands of the Watauga Pioneers. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Titans have suffered since March 25, 2025.
Carson Killough was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single earned run, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in March. He was even better at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run. That home run was his first of the season.
Killough wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Drue Rose, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
As for Watauga, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.6 runs over those games.
Like McDowell, Watauga also got a great game from a two-way player: Evan Burroughs. On the mound, Burroughs pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Daniel Jones tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Watauga is 8-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 6-7 otherwise. At the plate, Burroughs got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Jones got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. McDowell will take on rival Freedom at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Watauga is set to challenge their familiar foe St. Stephens at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
