EJ Montemayor made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, Julius Deleon was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more stolen bases the last four times he's played. Duke Bernal was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-5.
Meanwhile, Odem waltzed into their contest on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Panthers a 10-0 shutout. The Owls might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by six runs or more this season.
The result came thanks to Caleb Gonzalez's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Payton Simmons, who scored two runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-4. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1.2 stolen bases per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Gio Beltran, who scored three runs and stole three bases.
Odem's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-7. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mathis, their win bumped their record up to 6-13.
Mathis might still be hurting after the 7-1 defeat they got from Odem in their previous meeting two weeks ago. Will the Pirates have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
