Canon City is 2-8 against Coronado since September of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Tigers will head out to challenge the Cougars at 3:30 p.m. Canon City is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Canon City took a 14-run defeat the last time they faced off against Pueblo South, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Tigers came out on top in a nail-biter against the Colts on Friday, sneaking past 11-10. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Tigers.
Allisyn Gasseling and Cammi Leis did most of the damage at the plate: Gasseling went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Leis went 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one RBI. That's the most hits Leis has posted since September 2nd. Taylor Hand was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Canon City kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Coronado never got on the board in their matchup on Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Palmer on Thursday. They never let the Terrors get on the board and left with a 17-0 win. The game marked the Cougars' most dominant victory of the season.
Paige Pakenham made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Pakenham was even better at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ar'Monie Faniel, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and one triple. That triple was her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Leland, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
Canon City picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 5-11. As for Coronado, their record is now 8-11.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Canon City has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .436. However, it's not like Coronado struggles in that department as they've averaged .495. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Canon City might still be hurting after the 15-5 loss they got from Coronado when the teams last played last Thursday. Can the Tigers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
