Holmes County got a great performance from Kopper Nelson as he didn't allow a single earned run over six innings pitched. Nelson also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Blue Devils are 6-3 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 8-11 otherwise.
At the plate, Holmes County let Landen Gammons and Charlie Womble run wild. Gammons went a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI, while Womble got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Those two doubles gave Gammons a new career-high. Rhett Boyd was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Chipley posted their closest victory since April 2nd on Sunday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Northview 9-7.
Ty Gray made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off four hits. Gray was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on John Helms, who went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Another player making a difference was Brantley Kirkland, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one run.
The victory got Holmes County back to even at 14-14. As for Chipley, their record now sits at 17-11.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Holmes County has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Chipley struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Holmes County came out on top in a nail-biter against Chipley when the teams last played back in April, sneaking past 6-4. Will the Blue Devils repeat their success, or do the Tigers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
