Springstead and Mitchell are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Springstead Eagles will square off against the Mitchell Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Springstead is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Last Tuesday, Springstead was able to grind out a solid victory over Citrus, taking the game 7-3. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Eagles.
The team relied heavily on Billy Ward, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Tanner Henrickson also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Mitchell, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They blew past Fivay 26-0 on Wednesday. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by seven runs or more this season.
JACOB APONTE made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. APONTE was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-5.
In other pitching news, CADE VERMILLION looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
Back at the plate, Mitchell got a massive performance out of CARTER KOENIG, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. Another player making a difference was JOHNATHON RODRIGUEZ, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4.
Mitchell always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .744. The last time their OBP was this high was since the start of last season.
Mitchell now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Springstead, their record is now 7-2.
Springstead came out on top in a nail-biter against Mitchell in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, sneaking past 8-6. The rematch might be a little tougher for Springstead since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
