On Friday, the Gallup Bengals faced the Piedra Vista Panthers in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Gallup was the clear victor by a 60-39 margin over Piedra Vista. The victory was just business as usual for Gallup, who after three games remain undefeated this season.
Piedra Vista's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Christian Smith, who scored 12 points along with 7 rebounds. Smith scored a full 30.8% of Piedra Vista's points, the second time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Tyra Holyan was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Gallup's victory bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Piedra Vista, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.
Gallup won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Window Rock at 7:30 p.m. on December 2nd. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in their respective states (Window Rock is ranked fifth in Arizona, while Gallup is ranked fifth in New Mexico). As for Piedra Vista, they will head out on the road to face off against Tohatchi at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
