Middle Park and Platte Canyon are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Panthers will venture away from home to take on the Huskies at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Middle Park has given up an average of 10.6 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Middle Park came into their game on Thursday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Alameda, falling 11-1.
Middle Park saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gunnar Bjerken, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Platte Canyon got the win against Cripple Creek-Victor on Saturday by a conclusive 19-7. The win continues a trend for the Huskies in their matchups with the Pioneers: they've now won three in a row.
Nathan Laabs made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Laabs was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
In other batting news, Platte Canyon got a massive performance out of Jerod Horta, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. The Huskies are 2-1 when Horta posts two or more runs, but 0-6 otherwise. Layne Karashinski was another key player, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Platte Canyon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .639. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in five consecutive matches.
Platte Canyon's record is now 2-7. As for Middle Park, they dropped their record down to 2-5 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season.
Middle Park was able to grind out a solid victory over Platte Canyon in their previous matchup back in May of 2022, winning 12-7. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
