The Burke County Bears stacked a ninth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Islands with a sharp 76-56 victory. Given Burke County's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 147th, while Islands is ranked 358th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Burke County to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bryce Wimberly, who scored 21 points along with seven rebounds. Wimberly hasn't dropped below 16 points for five straight games. La'Quinton Morgan was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds.
Islands' loss came despite strong showings from Braylen Butterworth and Jordan Cave. Butterworth scored 18 points along with eight rebounds, while Cave scored 15 points. Cave is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Deondrae Hills, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
The win makes it two in a row for Burke County and bumps their season record up to 17-6. As for Islands, their defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 7-14.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Burke County will take on Benedictine at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Benedictine will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something Burke County surely won't give up without a fight. As for Islands, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Southeast Bulloch at 7:30 p.m. on February 7th. Islands is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 55.3 points per game this season.
