The University Trojans will be playing at home against the Bastrop Bears at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
University is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They walked away with a 35-27 victory over Fort Bend Marshall.
University got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Savoy Nichols out in front who threw for 141 yards and a pair of TDs, and also rushed for 52 yards on only five carries. Darrius Thomas also helped out as he racked up 101 rushing yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: University was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 290 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.
University didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. Khylen Estelle was the real danger to the passing game, picking up two interceptions all by himself. He was another major factor on D, making 17 total tackles and defending one pass in addition to snagging two interceptions.
Meanwhile, while Bastrop put up plenty of points on Friday, the same can't be said for Burbank. The Bears simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Bulldogs 62-0. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Bears' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 123rd, while the Bulldogs are ranked 980th).
University better keep an eye on Gary Jefferson Jr.. He was instrumental in Bastrop's win, rushing for 184 yards and four touchdowns on only ten carries, while also catching one score. Jefferson Jr.'s longest rush was for an impressive 69 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Zac Wilkinson was in the mix as well, providing Bastrop with two TDs.
Bastrop's victory was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-1. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 38.2 points. As for University, their record is now 7-4.
We should be in store for an exciting game as University and Bastrop have no problem gaining yardage. The Trojans have been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 391.9 total yards per game. However, it's not like Bastrop struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 461.3 total yards. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
