Weeki Wachee has enjoyed a five-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They just played last night, but they'll still head out to face the Hernando Leopards at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Weeki Wachee posted their biggest victory since December 21, 2023 on Monday. They took their match at home with ease, bagging a 68-14 win over Crystal River. Given Weeki Wachee's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 203rd, while Crystal River is ranked 473rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Weeki Wachee got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Paige Atwater out in front who scored 23 points along with four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Joelys Rodriguez, who scored 12 points along with six steals and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Hernando really took it to Central for the full four quarters, racking up a 46-8 win at home. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win Hernando has posted against Central since January 19, 2021.
Hernando's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kayla Holloman led the charge by scoring 13 points. Aislin Ruppe was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Weeki Wachee's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-7. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.0 points per game. As for Hernando, their victory bumped their record up to 12-9.
Weeki Wachee strolled past Hernando when the teams last played on January 6th by a score of 48-29. Will Weeki Wachee repeat their success, or does Hernando have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
