Football Recap: Mudassir Abdullah Key Part of Team Effort in Roughnecks Win

Columbia won the last time they faced Wharton and things went their way on Friday too. The Roughnecks managed a 42-36 win over the Tigers.

Columbia's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Mudassir Abdullah, who picked up 88 receiving yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 63 yards and one TD. Abdullah also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making six total tackles and defending one pass. Another signal caller making a difference was Cade Thoe, who threw for 184 yards and four touchdowns.

Columbia didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Wharton to a completion percentage of just 50%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from four players: Abdullah, Logan Lewis, Brayden Polk, and Xavier Boozy, who each logged one passes deflected. Columbia wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 68.2%.

Wharton's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ja'Keon Jackson, who rushed for 172 yards and one score on only 11 carries, and also threw for 100 yards and three TDs. With that strong performance, Jackson is now averaging an impressive 100.2 rushing yards per game. Brandon Sims Jr was another key player, gaining 142 total yards and three touchdowns.

Columbia picked up their first road victory, bumping their record up to 2-3. As for Wharton, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 3-2 record.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Columbia is set to take on their familiar foe Harmony School of Innovation at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Wharton will challenge rival La Marque at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 952 yards in their previous games.
