Port Charlotte (Fla.) jumped out to an early lead against
Mariner (Cape Coral, Fla.) and never looked back on the way to a 29-13 victory on Saturday.
The Pirates scored seven points in the first quarter. Port Charlotte scored on a touchdown run.
PC was up 14-0 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown run in the first quarter.
The Pirates saw their 14-point halftime lead fall to 13 entering the fourth.
Eric Russaw played well for the Tritons. The sophomore running back ran for one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
Port Charlotte went into the matchup giving up only 16.0 points per game. Mariner's 13 points were well below its season average of 20.4 per game.
The victory will ease some of the sting of PC's close 10-7 loss to MHS last season.
The win was a nice bounce back for the Pirates, which lost to Lemon Bay last week, 28-20.
In a 7A District 11 game next week Port Charlotte (6-2) takes on Gulf Coast, and Mariner (2-4) will go up against Cape Coral in a 5A District 11 game.
