Greenfield/Northwestern hasn't had much luck against Gillespie recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Tigers will look to defend their home field against the Miners at 4:30 p.m. Greenfield/Northwestern is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
Lincolnwood hit Greenfield/Northwestern with a four-run seventh inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Tigers fell just short of the Lancers by a score of 9-8.
Jaylynn Pitchford was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she tossed 6.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off nine hits. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-low in walks (zero).
On the hitting side, Annabeth Thornton was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. Jillian McAdams was another key player, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with two runs.
Meanwhile, Gillespie had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it seven on Tuesday. They never let the Cavaliers get on the board and left with a 6-0 win. The Miners might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 matchups by six runs or more this season.
The result came thanks to Sadie Sholtis's shutout, as she gave up just ten hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Paxton Reid was excellent, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Ava Parish, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases.
Gillespie's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-5. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Greenfield/Northwestern, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-10.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Greenfield/Northwestern hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.9 home runs per game. However, it's not like Gillespie struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Greenfield/Northwestern might still be hurting after the 15-3 loss they got from Gillespie when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Will the Tigers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
